Fucked Up
Check out this article about a NYT reporter, Carlotta Gal, who has been doing some deep reporting into the links between the Pakistani intelligence services and the Taliban.
As far as I can tell, the verdict is still out on whether or not Pakistani intelligence is still providing direct support to the Taliban---although there seems to be more and more evidence that they are. In any case, this is just horrible.
On our fifth and last day in Quetta, Dec. 19, four plainclothesmen detained Mr. Soomro at his hotel downtown and seized his computer and photo equipment.
They raided my hotel room that evening, using a key card to open the door and then breaking through the chain that I had locked from the inside. They seized a computer, notebooks and a cellphone.
One agent punched me twice in the face and head and knocked me to the floor. I was left with bruises on my arms, temple and cheekbone, swelling on my eye and a sprained knee.

there was an article on slate i think (but i can't find it) that listed fairly steep evidence that pakistani intelligence is indeed helping the taliban. or at the very least that certain entities within the pakistani government are manipulating the intelligence "department" to covertly help the taliban. of course this was a while ago and i haven't read anything furtner on it since
When you say this is horrible, is it because the reporter got beaten? Cause when you are investigating people who do illegal things, with intent to get them in trouble, it seems you might expect this would happen. Not that it should, or it is the reporter's fault, but when you are investigating the police (the people who SHOULD protect you) of being bad (and they might be bad), there isn't much to protect you.
If you think it is horrible that the intelligence service supports teh taliban, I'm curious why you are surprised, let alone horrified.
